Most US schools, colleges, and universities use the following 10-point letter grade scale:
| Letter Grade | Percentage Range | GPA Points | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 90% โ 100% | 4.0 | Excellent |
| Aโ | 90% โ 92%* | 3.7 | Excellent (minus) |
| B+ | 87% โ 89%* | 3.3 | Good (plus) |
| B | 80% โ 89% | 3.0 | Good |
| Bโ | 80% โ 82%* | 2.7 | Good (minus) |
| C+ | 77% โ 79%* | 2.3 | Satisfactory (plus) |
| C | 70% โ 79% | 2.0 | Satisfactory |
| Cโ | 70% โ 72%* | 1.7 | Satisfactory (minus) |
| D+ | 67% โ 69%* | 1.3 | Passing (plus) |
| D | 60% โ 69% | 1.0 | Passing |
| F | 0% โ 59% | 0.0 | Failing |
* Plus/minus variations are common but not universal. Many institutions use straight letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) without +/- modifiers. Always check your school's specific policy.
Most US courses use a weighted grading system where different assignments contribute different proportions to your final grade. For example, homework might be worth 10%, quizzes 20%, midterms 30%, and the final exam 40%. Your overall grade is computed as:
Overall = ฮฃ (Grade ร Weight) รท ฮฃ (Weight)
If your weights already sum to 100%, the denominator is 1 (just the sum of weighted scores). The Final Grade Calculator above solves for the unknown exam score using the formula:
Exam Score Needed = (Desired โ Current ร (1 โ Weight)) รท Weight
Where weight is the exam's weight expressed as a decimal (e.g., 30% = 0.30).
